Exide Technologies will transfer the manufacturing of its sealed Lead-acid network batteries, known as AbsolyteR IIP, from Kankakee, Illinois into other North American industrial battery manufacturing operations. In addition, Exide announced closure of two plastic facilities in Mississippi where battery covers and battery cases were made; the manufacturing for cases and covers will be moved to Exides Lampeter, Pennsylvania operation. These consolidations are part of Exides global manufacturing restructuring initiatives. Craig Muhlhauser, President and CEO of Exide Technologies, said, These closures are part of our ongoing restructuring efforts, and will result in reduced costs, improving quality and responsiveness in support of our customers.(04-02 BD73-6)


C&D Technologies reports earnings of $.16/share for fourth quarter ending January 31st. Last year, January 31, 2001, 4th quarter earnings were $.61/share. The Dynasty segment had a sales decline of 47 percent, when compared to the prior years 4th quarter, primarily due to a decrease in battery demand for uninterruptible power supplies as well as telecommunications applications. Hawker introduces new Powersafe G family of reformulated sealed Lead-calcium rechargeable batteries. These valve-regulated Lead-acid (VRLA) batteries contain high purity lead and electrolyte and have high compression rates. Each battery is designed with gas recombination technology which eliminates the need for regular water addition by controlling the evolution of hydrogen and oxygen during charging. The minimum level of gas evolution and the sealed, spill-proof construction allow battery installation in cabinets or on stands. Powersafe batteries are approved for air transport by the Department of Transportation and IATA and are certified by the Federal Aviation Administration and CAA.(........................................ )

The first auto to use a 36 Volt VRLA battery, the Crown, has been introduced by Toyota. This luxury sedan has sales of 500-1000 autos/month in the Japanese market. The Crown uses the 36/42 Volt system in a mild hybrid configuration . The battery supplier, Japan Storage Battery, has extended cycle life three times by using greater density positive active materials (PAM), introducing PAM additives and increasing the amount of carbon in the negative active material.
