Focusing on the PEM type of fuel cell, the recycling of the platinum used as a catalyst is the only interest at this time. Since there is no present large scale use of fuel cells, the expectation of recycling needs of the platinum is only a consideration today.
The techniques for recovering platinum are well developed. Precious metals referred to as PGMs include platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium and ruthenium. PGM pricing had been increasing with palladium reaching $1,100 an ounce last year.
Users of platinum are cautioned to understand that their liability may be connected to the refiner under the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) or Superfund Act. Refining facilities must address clean air, water and solids with proper compliance and documentation.
