Microsoft Excel Chart The German Renewable energy Law adopted in 2000 requires utilities to purchase renewable energy at predetermined rates. The cost of PV is0.457 and wind is € 0.09 per kWh. Since energy is sold to users at a rate of € 0.16, there is a net loss of about € 0.30 which is passed on to all consumers. That makes their total cost per kiloWatt =  € 0.46. At the current exchage rate of about 0.8 Euros to the dollar, a kiloWatt in Germany costs 36.8 cents, whereas U.S. consumers pay a nominal 10 cents per kWh.  ( Source IEEE Spectrum, January 2005, p. 31.) +

 Wind and solar rebates extended until year end
California’s Emerging Renewables Program has been extended by the California Energy Commission through the end of 2005. These rebates are $ 2.80/Watt for all size photovoltaic systems and $ 1.70/Watt for the first 7500 Watts of wind power and $ 0.70/watt for wind greater than 7500 Watts, up to 30,000 Watts. The average costs for a solar system is around $10/Watt and $ 6/Watt for a 10 kW wind system and $ 3.50/Watt for a 20 kW wind system. Only systems which are connected to the grid are eligible for the rebates. A grid connected, owner installed system is subject to a 15% reduction in the rebate for some undisclosed reason.

Adobe Photoshop Image The U.S. Postal Service dedicated the nation’s largest federal roof-integrated solar photovoltaic installation in its Marina Mail Processing Center in Marina del Rey, California. The 127 kiloWatt system was built and installed by PowerLight Corporation using solar panels produced at Siemens & Shell Solar. The solar array, measuring 50 X 300 feet, was largely funded by the Los Angeles Dept. of Water and Power under its Solar Incentive Program and the Department of Energy’s Distributed Energy Resources Program. Establishing another world record for the largest photovoltaic system integrated in a metal roof was Bekaert ECD Solar Systems Europe. The UNI-SOLARR PV laminates cover the roof on one of the main sections of the UBISA factory owned by N.V. Bekaert S.A. in Burgos, Spain. With an installed capacity of 76 kWp (kiloWatts peak), it is the largest PV roof in the world.(06-02BD75-9)

United Kingdom (UK) allocates 20 million pounds ($28.47 million U.S.) for solar installations on rooftops. Installed photovoltaics (PV) capacity in 2000 was only about two megaWatts in the UK compared with Japan where 100 megaWatts of solar panels are put on rooftops every year. The cost of installing solar panels on an average family house will cost about 10,000 -12,000 pounds, an amount which is very expensive. Ministers in the UK have set a target to generate 10 percent of the country’s electricity from renewables such as wind and solar by 2010. At present only 2.8 percent of Great Britain’s power comes from renewables, with very little solar comprising that percentage. (05-02 BD74-10)
