High Tech devices distracting drivers
Although cell phones are a major distractor for drivers, they are just the tip of the iceberg. Drivers are adding computers, PDAs, VCRs, DVDs, fax machines and dashboard video screens, increasing the number of accidents. Nationally, it is believed that 30% of crashes are caused by driver distractions, including mobile communicating devices. A March report by the National Conference of State Legislators suggest such distractions killed an estimated 600-1000 motorists in 2001 and could kill 2,000 by 2004. The California Highway Patrol recorded 2,169 injuries and 38 deaths related to cellphones in 2001.(10-02BD79-13)
