Question? - Is testing thickness at 100 kPa of any value for AGM separators?
Answer: No. Almost every prismatic battery jar, especially polyolefin cases, could not provide restraint to produce this pressure. Most batteries are never assembled using pressures much above 40 kPa; therefore, investigating properties at a thickness produced by 100 kPa has no meaning for the separator properties which will be placed in the battery. The characteristics of the separator at loads representative of real use are a better selection for testing. The Battery Council International (BCI) uses a load of only 10 kPa. The applied force can be estimated by the BCI compression and recover test method.
