Fuel Cell May Beat Batteries for Backup
Metallic Power has demonstrated a Zinc-air fuel cell which provides 3 kVA at 2.5 kW for up to five hours with the target of 8 hour operation. Using zinc pellets permits scaling the unit to power and energy requirements independently.
By comparison with an 8 hour Lead-acid battery backup, the rack mounted Zinc-air fuel cell could be three times smaller and weigh 10 times less. Field testing is to begin this year.
